About the Center

The mission of the University of Minnesota Obesity Prevention Center is to:

  1. foster and improve multidisciplinary research into the causes of obesity and to develop effective strategies to address the problem;
  2. be an educational resource center in the field of obesity prevention, both in our community and nationally;
  3. serve as an advocate for public policies that address the obesity epidemic.

Causation of obesity is defined broadly to include biological, behavioral, and sociocultural issues. Strategies to address the problems are likewise broadly defined to include interventions focusing on individuals, community organizations, health-care delivery systems, the environment, and public education and public policy advocacy.

The faculty and programs coordinated through the OPC seek to be catalysts for interdisciplinary collaboration within the University of Minnesota, between the University and the local community, and between individuals and organizations nationally and internationally that wish to address this important health issue.

Center Funding

The OPC has received substantial startup money and recurring core funding from the University of Minnesota School of Public Health and the Academic Health Center. No funding is received from industry sponsors.
