Obesity Coursework
The University of Minnesota offers advanced degree programs in a variety of schools and colleges that will enable students to pursue a career in the field of obesity prevention. In particular:
- the Division of Epidemiology & Community Health offers a variety of Masters-level degree programs, along with a PhD in Epidemiology.

This course looks at the prevention, treatment, and policy issues of obesity and eating disorders. Invited international experts will participate in lectures, discussions, and debates covering topics such as: What does the current science tell us about the treatment and prevention of obesity and eating disorders? What are the effective behavioral, pharmacologica, and surgical approaches? Does obesity prevention increase the risk of eating disorders?
PUBH 6390 - Obesity & Eating Disorders: Etiology/Epidemiology

This course looks at the causes and consequences of obesity and eating disorders: What causes obesity and why has it reached pandemic levels worldwide? Are eating disorders and obesity related? What about our culture promotes the development of obesity and eating disorders? What are the social, biological and environmental causes of obesity and eating disorders?
PUBH 5908 - Anthropometric Assessment of Nutritional Status
- (1.0 cr; Prereq-5450 or 5414 or equiv, grad or professional school student; spring, summer, every year)
- Anthropometry as used to assess nutritional status; training and experience in taking basic measurements; practical experience in anthropometry; conceptual rationales and interpretation of anthropometric data.
PUBH 5935 - Child and Adolescent Nutrition

- Current issues and literature. Major nutrition issues of youth; biological, cultural, and psycho-social factors influencing food behaviors; and strategies for improving nutritional health.
