The Future of Children (Spring 2006). This volume on “Childhood Obesity” was released by the Brookings Institution and the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University. The strategies to reduce obesity include preventative public education, parental actions, medical policies, school-based programs, environmental changes, and regulatory policies. Ten articles by leading scholars review the latest research on the causes and consequences of childhood obesity, and on interventions that may help reduce obesity among U.S. children. Preventing Childhood Obesity: Health in the Balance. The action plan of an Institute of Medicine appointed committee of 19 experts, including center member Simone French, PhD, that develops prevention-focused action plan to decrease the number of obese children and youth in the United States. The primary emphasis of the charge was to examine the behavioral, social, cultural, and other broad environmental factors involved in childhood obesity and to identify promising approaches for prevention efforts.
A Nation at Risk: Obesity in the United States. In response to the health concerns associated with obesity, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the American Heart Association have created a statistical sourcebook on obesity. This publication illustrates how prevalent obesity has become and examines the factors that contribute to the patterns of unhealthy eating and insufficient physical activity that are at the heart of this epidemic.
Obesity Prevention and Public Health. This book provides health researchers, practitioners and policy makers with a state of the science overview of the worldwide obesity epidemic and the case for prevention. The book reviews the existing evidence regarding the effectiveness of strategies to promote healthy eating and physical activity and prevent obesity. It also includes expert views of the potential opportunities for innovative approaches to tackle the obesity epidemic. |
