Keep-It-Off The National Cancer Institute's Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences has funded a study by Nancy Sherwood, PhD, HealthPartners Research Foundation. "Novel Approaches to Weight Loss Maintenance" utilizes data from the Keep It Off pilot study to evaluate the effectiveness of a new weight loss maintenance intervention in a large-scale intervention trial. Circle Grant The University of Minnesota Faculty Research Circle Grants in International Studies, Interdisciplinary Center for the Study of Global Change, and Office of the Vice President for Research has funded a one-year (2006-07) grant to Robert Jeffery, PhD. The "Global Studies on the Prevention of Obesity" is designed to stimulate interdisciplinary, international research aimed at studying factors contributing to the worldwide obesity epidemic. TREC The National Cancer Institute has funded a 5-year (2005-10), $54 million initiative to expand its efforts to understand the relationship between obesity and cancer. The Transdisciplinary Research on Energetics and Cancer (TREC) initiative supports a diverse team of scientists in its aims to integrate the study of diet, weight, and physical activity and their effects on cancer. Principal Investigator Anne McTiernan, MD, PhD. This project will focus on prevention of breast and colorectal cancers, with particular emphasis on diet and physical activity. Principal Investigator Michael Goran, PhD. This project will explore the physiologic, metabolic, genetic, behavioral, and environmental influences on obesity and cancer risk in minority children. HealthWorksThe National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases has funded a 5-year grant (2005-10) entitled "Environmental Interventions for Weight Gain Prevention," Principal Investigator Robert Jeffery, PhD. HealthWorks is a randomized trial designed to evaluate the effectiveness of a multicomponent worksite intervention with strong environmental components to prevent weight gain.
